  Why Bother With Barter?

September 6th, 2011

Sometimes when I suggest to someone that they barter their service, I see them pull back a bit. I think they’re afraid that offering their service for barter will somehow diminish its value. Nothing could be further from the truth. Bartering isn’t about giving up something–  it’s not even about getting something.

Bartering is about creating relationships and trust.

Putting together a successful barter deal requires more interaction than handing over one’s debit card to make a purchase. By the time a barter transaction is finalized, the rapport developed by the barter partners will be the foundation for not only future trades, but mutual referrals. Each partner will gain a business alliance, a co-marketer and word of mouth advertising unlike any created by a simple cash transaction. The reality is that a service bartered will likely exceed the value of a service sold.
